Did you know that in-person shopping still makes up 74% of US retail sales in this era of eCommerce? In other words, Shopify POS stores act as the ideal wingman to your online store, adding customers, brand trust, presence, web traffic, revenue, and more.

The secret to that crowd-pulling ability—in-store staff. They add a personal touch to shopping that eCommerce simply can’t replicate. It goes without saying that your Shopify staff management should be without hiccups if you want to score big in terms of ROI from your physical stores. That’s easier said than done, with attrition, morale, customer interaction, and a lot of other things to handle.

Let’s take a look at how you acquire valuable relevant data that can make your Shopify staff management a breeze and boost their performance.

Making Shopify Staff Management Happen with Data

Shopify Analytics provides essential staff data through its reports. If you need to go beyond the essentials, a third-party app like Report Pundit is what you need. Here are some staff management issues you can tackle with it:

Shopify Staff Commissions

Handing out commissions is proven to motivate staff to perform better. You can calculate commission amounts manually using data from Shopify reports for each staff member. But why take the long route when you can automate it and have those figures at your fingertips when you need them?

For example, take a look at this report by Report Pundit with a custom data column for Commissions. You can set the percentage of commission in the formula for the calculated column.

In the above report example, the percentage of commission is set at 8% of the total sales amount. The Staff Name column is added using the Add Columns button shown. Similarly, you can even add Staff Attribute data fields to show additional staff members who’ve contributed to the sales.

Tracking Custom Metrics

Let's say you run an employee reward scheme where your Shopify POS staff commission depends on the return rate of the items they’ve sold. This means tracking returns by staff members alongside the sales they’ve generated.

Managing staff commissions can be challenging with frequent returns and partial commission cuts when only some items in an order are returned. Using custom data columns can help you hand out fair commissions to your staff in these tricky situations.

In Report Pundit, for example, you can create a custom Commissions column to calculate the correct amount using your desired formula and staff performance data. It’ll show the exact amount owed to your staff. No more breaking a sweat trying to accurately calculate that amount, or dealing with unhappy staff members.

Managing your Shopify Multi-store Staff

Tracking and gaining staff data across the board becomes a game of whack-a-mole that only gets harder over time as you add physical stores. Why shuffle through multiple records for Shopify staff performance insights when you can consolidate everything in one report?

Bringing your Top Performers to the Top

Once you have multi-store staff data, you get a direct look at how well your staff members are performing.

Sorting your data brings your best-selling products and the staff members who’ve contributed to those sales, to the top of the list. Those assisting with the sales can also be displayed, along with their share of commissions.

It’s hitting two birds with one stone—more of your best-selling items get pushed to customers by staff members who are more motivated, increasing revenue. The added bonus is that once identified, you can learn the secret behind your top-performing staff, and make it a part of your staff training.

Take another look at the Best Selling Products report used earlier:

You can see that the Total Sales column is sorted in descending order using the Sort by button at the top right. Staff Name, POS Location Name, Order Number, and Date are custom columns added using the Add Columns button.

From the example report, it’s easy to tell that Shontel from the POS store on 66th St. Johnson Ave. was the top performer, selling the product with the most revenue (Samsung S23 Mobile, 6 units, $3149.94).

Tip: You can even know the commission you owe them with the custom commission column in tow.

Summing Up

Shopify POS staff do more than move items off store shelves—they act as representatives of your business. With the right data, you can offer accurate commissions and discover shortcomings in how you manage them. It’s just the insights you need to keep your physical stores running like clockwork, reducing attrition and improving staff performance.
